Summary:
|
WHEREAS, the Newark Board of Education approved an award of contract for Montclair State University (MSU) during the June 30, 2020 Board Meeting for a one (1) year period of August 1, 2020 through June 30, 2021 to continue with the Newark Teacher Project whose purpose is to improve the quality and quantity of prospective teachers of color and to build capacity of mentor teachers within the Newark Board of Education; and
WHEREAS, the partnership includes: (1) a year-long clinical internship and teacher preparation program in Newark Board of Education schools working alongside experienced teacher mentors; (2) rigorous coursework that takes place with MSU and is integrated with clinical practice; (3) a cohort structure for teacher candidates and novice teachers hired after program completion; and (4) induction support for graduates once they are hired as Newark Board of Education teachers; and
WHEREAS, the original contract award permitted the Newark Board of Education to pay MSU stipends for teacher candidates who commit to working in a Newark Board of Education school for three years after graduation ($10,000.00 per teacher) and to mentor teachers up to $3,000.00 per mentor for a full-year of mentoring for a maximum of 15 teacher candidates and 15 mentors; and
WHEREAS, the Newark Board of Education approved the first amendment during the June 22, 2021 Board Meeting changing the allocation to twelve (12) students each receiving a stipend of $14,375.00 for a total of $172,500.00 and fifteen (15) mentor teachers receiving a stipend of $1,500.00 for a total of $22,500.00. The amendment also changed the contract term from August 1, 2020 through September 30, 2021 to August 1, 2020 through September 30, 2025; and
WHEREAS, the District desires a second amendment for the inclusion of four (4) additional teacher candidates each receiving a stipend of $55,00.00, and four (4) additional mentor teachers receiving a stipend of $1,500.00; and
WHEREAS, the District is authorized to enter into an agreement without advertisement with the United States of America, the State of New Jersey, county or municipality or any board, body, officer, agency authority or board of education or any other state or subdivision thereof in accordance with NJSA 18A:18A-5b; and
WHEREAS, the recommendation for amendment of term contract was reviewed and approved by Dr. Yolonda Mendez, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources. |

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Newark Board of Education accepts and approves the second amendment of term contract for inclusion of four (4) additional teacher candidates each receiving a stipend of $55,00.00, and four (4) additional mentor teachers each receiving a stipend of $1,500.00 for a contract term of August 1, 2020 through September 30, 2025 as follows:
Montclair State University, Montclair, NJ at an amount not to exceed from $195,000.00 annually for a five (5) year period to $1,201,000.00 for a five (5) year period (additional $226,000.00)
