Summary:
|
Whereas, the Newark Board of Education submitted an application to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and has been awarded the Newark Health and Wellness Project; and Whereas, the Newark Health and Wellness Project seeks to support improve adolescent health and well-being by supporting local education agencies provide quality health education, connect students to health services, and create safe and supportive environments. There are two main components to the grant. Component 1, requires the NBOE to conduct school-based surveillance of health risk behaviors by administering the Youth Risk Behavior Surveys (YRBS) and School Profiles. The surveys are part of a national initiative and will help the City of Newark and the school district identify current health and safety habits so improvements can be made to district policies and procedures. Component 2, the NBOE will implement effective health education and services to students and ensure the district creates a safe and supportive environment for all; and Whereas, the funding will be used to support and implement the program strategies: (1) Strategy 1A: Health education, (2) Strategy 1B: Health services, (3) Strategy 1C: Safe and supportive environments, (4) Strategy 1D: Family, school, and community engagement, and (5) Strategy 1E: School-based surveillance; and Whereas, the Newark Board of Education was awarded this five-year grant, each year of the grant is in the amount of $360,000 for the period of August 1, 2024 through July 31, 2029; and Whereas, the Office of Federal Programs and Grants will oversee the grant funding in collaboration with the Office of Health and Physical Education. |

Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved, the Newark Board of Education accepts the grant award from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in the amount of $360,000 annually for the 5-year Newark Health and Wellness Project and intends to comply with the provisions in the grant agreement. |
