Summary: Whereas, the Newark Board of Education will partner with HBCU Simmons College of Kentucky, the University of Louisville and the Muhammad Ali Center to provide a unique college and community involvement experience to our students. This Cultural Immersion Experience will promote a broad implementation of educational awareness programs regarding the contributions of African Americans. As a result, ten High School students from Malcolm X Shabazz and Newark School of Global Studies, under the tutelage of the school provost, Ambassador Shabazz, will experience project base learning culturally relevant pedagogy firsthand college life and a social justice experience.
Whereas, the purpose of this unique opportunity will promote student enrichment by immersing students in a life altering cultural experience. Students will exercise their analytical, leadership, problem-solving skills articulate their contributions in solving world issues. Our district promotes the education and implementation of the Amistad Curriculum to the citizens and students of New Jersey by exploring the historical events associated with the African slave trade, slavery in America, the vestiges of slavery in this country and the contributions of African-Americans in overcoming these obstacles to contribute to the development of this country. Whereas, the students will learn historical facts on contributors in the collegiate field by visiting Simmons College, the only Historically Black College in Louisville KY, learn about the Muhammad Ali Cultural Center, the athletic and social contributions in baseball by visiting the Slugger Museum and regional sites which impact American history. In addition, the students will experience the social consciousness of the political climate dealing with issues how other states across the nation response to diversity and equity.
Students will travel and research critical issues within the community of their stay. The union of the hosts will provide the venue and environment where students will immerse and conduct inquiry-based research and engage in a social justice action research project.
Funding : 10-11-190-100-800-401-000-000 for $25,000
Recommendation to the Board: Now therefore, be it resolved that the proposed Tri Campus Newark Board of Education Summer Community Experience/Field Trip- Cultural Immersion Experience has been reviewed, approved and recommended by the Instruction and Program Committee and recommended for approval by the full Board of Education for $25,000 as outlined on the attachment.
