Summary: The Teacher Academy: Red Hawks Rising (TA:RHR) is a program at both University High School and East Side High School in Newark, New Jersey. Students who participate in the Teacher Academy: Red Hawk Rising program courses at the respective high schools will be asked to participate in the study. Participants will be high school students, ranging from 9th grade to 12th grade who take courses within the RHR program, as well as adults such as Teachers, Principals, CTE program supervisor, Parents, and the Teacher Academy advisory committee members that are involved with the Teacher Academy: Red Hawks Rising program.

The requested On-Site Research is imperative to studying the outcomes of the Teacher Academy: Red Hawks Rising (TA:RHR) program. This unique program is a collaboration between the Newark Board of Education, the American Federation of Teachers, and Montclair State University. The Teacher Academy: Red Hawks Rising (TA:RHR) is modeled after elements of the nationally-recognized Pathways2Teaching program and designed to engage high school students of color in exploring the teaching profession through a social justice and equity lens. The goal of this “Grow Your Own” program model is to diversify the teacher workforce by recruiting students of color to enter the teaching profession and ultimately return to Newark Public Schools to become teachers of record. The Teacher Academy: Red Hawks Rising is a four-year Career and Technical Education (CTE) Program of Study that will prepare Newark’s next generation of teachers.

During the 2021-22 School Year, the researchers would like to conduct the following research activities:

• Interview participating students in grades 9-12 (up to) 3x per year (30-60 min each)
• Student focus group 1x per year
• Interview teachers 1x per year
• Interview parents 1x per year
• Advisory board 1x per year
• Observations of classes 1-2x per month
• Student survey 1x per year
• Review artifacts of student work
