Summary: WHEREAS, fostering an environment of peace and understanding is essential for the growth, development, and success of our students and community; and
WHEREAS, promoting a culture of peace helps to create a safe and harmonious learning environment that is conducive to academic achievement; and
WHEREAS, recognizing the significance of the International Day of Peace, observed annually on September 21st, as an opportunity to strengthen the ideals of peace among all nations and peoples; and
WHEREAS, understanding that nurturing the values of empathy, tolerance, and respect for diversity can contribute to the prevention of conflicts and the establishment of a just and equitable society; and
WHEREAS, acknowledging the role of education in shaping young minds and attitudes towards peace, social justice, and global cooperation; and
WHEREAS, appreciating the commitment of individuals, organizations, and communities around the world who dedicate their efforts to promoting peace, resolving conflicts, and building bridges between different cultures;

Recommendation to the Board: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Education of the City of Newark (“Board”) hereby proclaims the week of September 14 to September 21, 2024 as "Peace Week" within our District and community; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that during this week, the Board encourages teachers, students, parents, and community members to engage in activities that promote peace, understanding, and unity; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that schools are encouraged to organize events, discussions, workshops, and educational programs that highlight the importance of peace, conflict resolution, and the value of cultural diversity; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Board calls upon all residents to take this opportunity to engage in acts of kindness, compassion, and collaboration, fostering an atmosphere of mutual respect and harmony; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Board requests that the district administration collaborate with local organizations, institutions, and community leaders to promote Peace Week and provide resources that support its successful implementation; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be made available to all schools and administrative offices within the Newark Public Schools and that it be shared with the broader community through appropriate communication channels.

Member Daniel Gonzalez Moved, Member Josephine Garcia seconded to approve the Original motion 'NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Education of the City of Newark (“Board”) hereby proclaims the week of September 14 to September 21, 2024 as "Peace Week" within our District and community; and
