Summary: This project aims to support teachers in cultivating Belonging-Centered Instruction in mathematics classrooms. Belonging-Centered Instruction (BCI) is a teacher’s provision of social and pedagogical supports that mitigate student alienation in mathematics and provide opportunities to actively empower students of color to realize their mathematical skills, belongingness, and agency. Based on the observational analysis, feedback and instructional strategies will be provided to the teacher to enhance their teaching practices as well as identify the teacher’s pre-existing strengths. Teachers’ development in BCI will be measured over time.

Up to five teachers identified by the district will participate in a monthly review cycle where they will upload a video to a secure website that the researcher’s team will review and identify instances where the teacher incorporated Belonging Centered Instruction was used or missed opportunities to utilize it. After the teachers will spend three weeks integrating this feedback and then record a reflection video. This feedback cycle will take about a month and repeat about 5-6 times throughout the year. Additionally, the researchers are requesting classroom-level demographics: % Female, % Black, # of students present for each lesson.

Principal Researcher and their agents agree to maintain all client information confidentially in accordance with all New Jersey state and federal laws and regulations.
Funding : No cost to the district.
