Summary: Whereas, School Improvement Grants (SIG), are issued through State educational agencies (SEAs), to local educational agencies (LEAs) for use in schools that demonstrate the greatest need for the funds and the strongest commitment to use the funds to provide adequate resources to raise substantially the achievement of their students in their lowest performing schools; and

Whereas, the United States Department of Education approved the New Jersey Department of Education’s request to extend the availability of federal FY-16 School Improvement Grant (SIG) funds. This extension will, in part, allow Avon Avenue School to use its FY-21 SIG carryover; and

Whereas, the NJ Department of Education awarded Newark Board of Education the no-cost extension for Avon Avenue School in the amount of $391,518 to focus on two key areas: Data analysis and Backwards Design and Unit Planning;

Whereas, the SIG no-cost extension grant period ends May 15, 2022.

Recommendation to the Board: Now, Therefore Be It Resolved, the Newark Board of Education accepts the no-cost extension of the School Improvement Grant for Avon Avenue School in the amount of $391,518 and intends to implement the SIG-funded activities throughout the extended project period.
